Fix a bank connection
Bank connections can break. A bank can stop sharing data, or a slow bank can take a while to send its first transactions. Here is how to tell what is going on and fix it.
What the status badges mean
Open All pages in the left sidebar, then under Daily work click Banking. Each account shows a status.

- A recent time, such as 2 hours ago, means the feed is healthy.
- Re-auth required, click to reconnect (red). Your bank stopped the connection. Click that badge.
- Reconnect this account (on a Sync error). The last sync did not finish. Click that button.
- Importing... Your bank is still preparing the first batch. Some banks take a few minutes. No action needed.
Reconnect a broken account
- Open All pages, then under Daily work click Banking.
- Click the red Re-auth required, click to reconnect badge, or Reconnect this account.
- Sign in to your bank in the secure window.
If you do not see those buttons, click Connect a bank and pick the same bank again.
Either way, BooksGPT recognizes the account, keeps its history, and resumes syncing. Nothing gets deleted and no duplicate account is created.
If months of transactions are missing
Some banks only share a limited history, often a few months. Fill a hole with a statement:
- If Banking shows a possible missing date range, see "Fill a possible gap in bank history".
- Or open All pages, then under Setup click Upload bank statement. See "Upload a bank statement".
Only upload each statement once. Uploading the same file twice can create duplicates.
Can't find your card's bank?
Banks are listed by the company that issues the card, not the brand on it. For example, a Shopify credit card is issued by a partner bank, so search for that bank's name instead.
If you are not sure who issues your card, check the fine print on the card or its statement, or ask us in chat.
Want to remove an account?
Click Settings at the bottom of the sidebar, find Bank connections, and click Manage connections. Choose Disconnect beside the account. That permanently stops future syncing but keeps the transactions already in your books.
If you only want to hide an account from day-to-day use, open All pages, then under Accounting click Chart of accounts. Find the account and choose Make inactive.
Good to know
- Accounts sync once a day on their own. Use the re-sync icon on the Banking page to refresh sooner.
- If the bank reconnects but brings back less history than you expected, see "How BooksGPT connects to your bank, and how much history you get".
- Still stuck? Message us from the chat bubble and we will look at the connection directly.
